Article 1, Section 9, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution says, "and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time." If you've never heard of it, the Federal Account Symbols and Titles, or the FAST book for short, keeps records of government spending. To view the most recent publication... Click Here.
After reviewing the FAST book, however, it isn't exactly clear how much money is being appropriated to each category which somewhat negates transparency which is the obvious intention of the clause. The Trump Administration is seeking to cut waste via an entity called DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency) which is headed by Elon Musk. Already, several federal jobs have been eliminated with many more on the horizon. There are claims that $600 million dollars has already been saved which is peanuts considering the enormity of the national debt. It's like owing $360,000 and finding a way to save $6. DOGE posted to X, formerly Twitter, an itemization of programs set to be slashed... Click Here.
Among their findings, DOGE says that fraud is a major culprit of wasted taxpayer funds as well. Maybe these are efforts by the government to give people some encouragement that we are moving in the right direction. We can all admit that government spending has spiraled out of control, especially in recent decades, but one would hope that money has been used for programs that benefit the people of this nation. It's hard to imagine a $36 trillion debt with nothing to show for it. Despite Social Security costing almost $374 billion annually, the program is in jeopardy. Infrastructure has been neglected for some time as roads and bridges are deteriorating nationwide.
