The banning of TikTok was proposed because there are those that feel it influences American opinions or has the potential to do so. Besides that, it's a China-owned company which may also make it a national security threat. Now retired National Security Agency Director Paul Nakasone said in March 2023 that he was worried about the data TikTok collects, the algorithm used to disperse information to users, and "the control of who has the algorithm." Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, faced a congressional hearing about data collection and selling it to a third party, Cambridge Analytica. This situation is slightly different seeing as how information about citizens of the United States could fall into the hands of the Chinese government. Since TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company, some believe that the owners may face coercion due to laws requiring them to share data with the government. President Joe Biden signed legislation in April of 2024 that gives ByteDance one year to sell TikTok or be banned seeing as how 100 million Americans use it.
