Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Bride! is a radical, punk-rock reimagining of the classic Frankenstein mythology set in 1930s Chicago. Moving far beyond Mary Shelley's gothic origins, the film stars Christian Bale as a lonely, scarred Frankenstein’s Monster who travels to the city to seek the help of Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) in creating a companion. They reanimate a murdered young woman named Ida (Jessie Buckley), but the resulting "Bride" is far more autonomous and volatile than they ever intended. Her awakening sparks a "combustible romance" with the Monster and ignites a wild social movement, all while they are pursued by a persistent detective played by Peter Sarsgaard.
The film is visually striking, shot entirely on IMAX digital cameras by cinematographer Lawrence Sher and featuring an experimental, high-fashion aesthetic. Jessie Buckley takes on an ambitious triple role, playing the reanimated Bride, the original murdered woman Ida, and even the author Mary Shelley. The supporting cast is equally high-profile, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, and Julianne Hough. With a score by Hildur Guðnadóttir and a script that blends dark romance, cop chases, and even musical dance numbers, The Bride! is being positioned as a bold, "Hard R" meditation on female agency and the "monster inside us all."
