Should Jay-Z have chosen himself as the Super Bowl halftime headliner?

Posted 11/1/2026

Sean "Jay-Z" Carter is a Brooklyn, New York, native who rose to fame in the 1990s and became a hip-hop superstar, selling between 33 million and 45 million physical records. When factoring in digital track sales, streaming equivalents, and global units, estimates place his total career output at over 106 million to 125 million units globally. Jay-Z is also the co-founder and chairman of Roc Nation, an American full-service entertainment company inclusive of artist and athlete management.

Roc Nation formed a long-term collaboration with the NFL that began on August 14, 2019, managing live music entertainment strategy and social justice initiatives for the league. Roc Nation and the NFL initially agreed to a five-year partnership, but it was extended in 2024 for an additional five years worth a reported $25 million. The deal gave Roc Nation the responsibility of selecting the artist or group that would perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. Since that time, lineups have included Shakira and Jennifer Lopez (2020), The Weeknd (2021), Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar, with a special appearance by 50 Cent (2022), Rihanna (2023), Usher (2024), Kendrick Lamar (2025), and Bad Bunny (2026).

Slated to perform at the 2027 Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show is none other than Jay-Z. Some critics were skeptical of the decision, citing a potential conflict of interest, among other concerns. A broader challenge may be connecting with younger audiences; despite his massive success starting three decades ago, some wonder how his catalog will resonate—a true classic case of Gen-Z vs. Jay-Z. However, the NFL fanbase spans a wide demographic range, and Jay-Z's performance gives younger generations an opportunity to experience foundational hip-hop history.

The decision is by no means unprecedented. Chubby Checker and the Rockettes performed in 1988 when neither had an active chart-topping single. The same holds true for past performers like Patti LaBelle, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder. The Blues Brothers never scored a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Furthermore, while country music is generally less consumed globally than rock, hip-hop, or pop, Shania Twain headlined a halftime show, and Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, and The Judds staged "Rockin' Country Sunday" in 1994.

Ultimately, the combination of legacy and spectacle bodes well for a memorable performance. Jay-Z could be joined by his wife, megastar Beyoncé, who has performed at three Super Bowls herself (including singing the national anthem). A guest appearance by Alicia Keys is another strong possibility given their smash duet "Empire State of Mind" and her management tie to Roc Nation. Additionally, Roc Nation represents or has represented heavyweights like Megan Thee Stallion, A$AP Rocky, J. Cole, and John Legend. While rumors swirled that top pop acts like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, or Justin Bieber might headline, those speculations have yet to come to fruition.
