Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger is an ambitious, satirical black comedy that blends grand ecological anxiety with absurd political critique. The story follows Digger Rockwell, a fast-talking and aggressively wealthy oil tycoon whose relentless pursuit of crude oil triggers a catastrophic, world-threatening explosion at a drilling rig in Greenland.
As global panic sets in and the fallout threatens to destroy civilization, Digger races against the clock to spin the disaster to his advantage and prove himself as humanity's ultimate savior. Alongside his business partner and half-sister, Emma, he navigates an increasingly surreal landscape involving a dictatorial U.S. President, panicked corporate elites, and dissenting scientists, all while blurring the lines between reality, responsibility, and theatrical farce.
The film features an all-star ensemble cast, anchored by Tom Cruise in a transformative, high-stakes lead performance as the eccentric billionaire Digger Rockwell. He is joined by Sandra Hüller as Emma Rockwell, Riz Ahmed as Dr. Nirav Ganesh (Digger's head of environmental safety), and John Goodman as the dictatorial President Compson, alongside Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons.
