The 2025 film The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell as Ben Richards, is a new adaptation of the classic Stephen King dystopian novel, touted as being much more faithful and darker than the 1987 movie. Set in a near-future, economically ruined, totalitarian America, the story revolves around the nation's top-rated, deadly game show, The Running Man. In this competition, impoverished contestants, known as "Runners," must try to survive for 30 days while being relentlessly hunted by professional assassins called "Hunters," with every moment of the brutal chase broadcast live to an addicted, bloodthirsty public.
The protagonist, working-class Ben Richards, is desperate to save his gravely ill daughter and is convinced by the charming but manipulative producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the lethal game. However, Ben's quick wit, street instincts, and refusal to play the role of a victim unexpectedly turn him into a national sensation and a growing symbol of defiance against the oppressive system.
As his popularity skyrockets, the stakes and danger increase, transforming his personal fight for survival into a high-stakes threat to the entire dystopian government, which uses the spectacle of the game to keep the public pacified.
