They Will Kill You is a high-octane action-horror comedy that follows Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz), a recently paroled woman attempting to reconnect with her estranged sister, Maria. Upon discovering that Maria is working as a maid at The Virgil, a legendary and ultra-exclusive New York high-rise, Asia bluffs her way into a housekeeping job to find her. The setting is less of a luxury residence and more of a gilded cage; it is soon revealed that the building is a vertical fortress for a Satanic cult composed of the city’s wealthiest and most depraved elite. Led by the chilling superintendent Lilith Woodhouse (Patricia Arquette), the residents maintain their immortality through an annual human sacrifice. This year, Asia and the other service staff are the designated prey, turning a simple family reunion into a desperate struggle for survival.
The film distinguishes itself through a "video game" narrative structure, as Asia is forced to fight her way through increasingly bizarre levels of the building to reach the penthouse. Directed by Kirill Sokolov, the movie leans heavily into stylized ultraviolence and dark slapstick, arming Asia with everything from katanas to flaming axes as she tears through eccentric, tuxedo-clad cultists. While the plot touches on themes of class warfare and the predatory nature of the "one percent," the focus remains firmly on its grindhouse energy and gory practical effects. Critics have praised Beetz’s powerhouse performance and the film's frantic pacing, though the sheer volume of "immortal" enemies creates a chaotic, relentless atmosphere. Ultimately, it is a bloody, satirical genre-bender that reimagines the classic "haunted house" trope as a neon-soaked, high-rise battleground.
