Directed by Johannes Roberts, "Primate" is a 2026 survival-horror film that has been described as a "brutal, old-school throwback" to classic creature features. The story follows Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah), a college student who returns to her family’s secluded, high-end estate in Hawaii for summer break. She is reunited with her father Adam (Troy Kotsur) and their long-time pet: a gentle, red-shirt-wearing chimpanzee named Ben.
The tension begins when Ben is bitten by a rabid animal in the surrounding jungle. As the family hosts a pool party, the infection takes hold, transforming the beloved pet into a calculating and savage predator. The film centers on a harrowing standoff at the home's infinity pool; because chimpanzees cannot swim, the water becomes the survivors' only sanctuary. However, with their phones out of reach and a rabid, intelligent apex predator stalking the perimeter, the "gilded cage" of the pool becomes a desperate battleground.
Critics have praised the film for its emotional depth, particularly the bond between Ben and Adam, who uses American Sign Language to try and reach the chimp through its haze of madness. By blending practical effects with a physical performance by Miguel Torres Umba, Roberts creates a visceral experience that emphasizes the terrifying strength of a primate. Holding a high critical rating for its "jaw-dropping" gore and suspenseful pacing, "Primate" is a standout horror entry that explores the heartbreaking breakdown of the bond between man and animal.
