Back on October 27, 2023, the Department of Defense announced that the United States will pursue a modern variant of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb, designated the B61-13, pending Congressional authorization and appropriation. This bomb is supposed to be 24 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima, Japan which was equivalent to 15 kilotons (15,000 tons or 30,000,000 pounds) of TNT. The Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) would produce the B61-13. Russia tested Tsar Bomba in 1961 which was as powerful as 50 megatons (50,000,000 tons) of TNT! "The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and field the capabilities we need to credibly deter and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks, and assure our allies," said Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb.
