McDonald's was founded in 1940 by the McDonald brothers, Richard and Maurice. They introduced their "Speedee Service System" in 1948. The brothers were bought out by businessman Ray Kroc in 1961. Kroc was trying to sell the McDonald brothers shake machines when he discovered a unique opportunity which eventually led to him being called "the founder" (if you haven't seen the movie)... McDonald's most popular burger may be the Big Mac. Inspired by the original McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino, California, Burger King was founded in 1954. Burger King began making flame-broiled burgers after they encountered problems with their original equipment known as Insta-broilers. The flame-broilers made Burger King successful, but the company has gone through various iterations, and owners, to become the company that we know today. Their signature burger is the Whopper. Of the three largest burger chains, Wendy's came along in 1969. Founded by Dave Thomas, Wendy's offered square hamburgers with a "fresh, never frozen" slogan behind them. Thomas named the burger chain after his daughter Melinda Lou "Wendy" Thomas. Wendy's signature burger is Dave’s single which you can also get as a double or a triple.
