Was the ICE agent that shot Renee Good justified in his actions?

Posted 1/18/2026

The situation in Minnesota has taken a turn for the worse. Ongoing protests have led to Governor Tim Walz mobilizing the National Guard in an effort to calm the storm. Events escalated when ICE agents killed Renee Nicole Good on January 7, 2026. Good was a 37-year-old mother of three children expressing her disapproval of ICE actions at the time of her death. ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot Ms. Good three times, including at least one shot to the head, claiming self-defense as she approached him with her vehicle. After a video surfaced of the incident, some people began to cry bloody murder, while others declared that the shooting was justified.  Not to mention, George Floyd was killed less than a mile from where the events unfolded. A GoFundMe account and a GiveSendGo account were created in Officer Ross' name, and they collected a combined 1 million dollars... Click Here.

There was also an account established for Ms. Good, which was closed after raising roughly 1.5 million dollars.... Click Here.

President Trump weighed in on what transpired, speaking about Ms. Good, saying, "I would bet you that she, under normal circumstances, was a very solid, wonderful person. But, you know, her actions were pretty tough." The President's stance was that of unwavering support for ICE agents, as he said, "Their job is being made very, very difficult." ICE has been called the Gestapo, an acronym of Geheime Staatspolizei, meaning Secret State Police. The Gestapo was used in Germany to eliminate opposition to the Nazi party during Hitler's rise to power. The characterization of ICE, comparing them to the Gestapo, is very unsettling and has serious connotations. People were often arrested and detained by the Gestapo without due process, as many fear is the case in the U.S. In 2025 alone, 32 people died in ICE custody across the country, highlighting serious concerns about medical neglect, overcrowding, and mental distress in detention centers.

Ms. Good hasn't been the only American citizen to lose their life as ICE raids have been carried out. Keith Porter, Jr., was shot by an off-duty ICE agent on New Year's Eve in Northridge, California, and since September 2025, 11 people have been shot... Click Here.

People have begun to question the authority that ICE actually has. Its stated mission is to conduct criminal investigations, enforce immigration laws, preserve national security, and protect public safety. ICE agents can stop, detain, and arrest people they suspect of being in the United States illegally. ICE is also authorized to use deadly force if a person poses a serious danger or has committed a violent crime. The administrative warrants ICE uses have been subject to some legislative debate, though ICE agents need a judicial warrant signed by a judge to gain entry to a private residence.

Mass deportation would never be an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination. Stephen Miller, Homeland Security advisor, mandated that 3,000 arrests be carried out daily. If ICE agents were able to accomplish what Miller wants, arresting 3,000 people daily, only 1,095,000 of the estimated 30,000,000 illegal immigrants living in the U.S. would be removed.  With such ambitious goals, the general public may soon see operations ramping up.
