Gas or Electric Heat. Which do you prefer?

Posted 9/9/2025

With rising energy costs, people may be exploring which heating option is best for them - gas or electric. The gas stove was considered a major milestone because people used coal or wood as the main source of fuel prior to that. Though the first gas stoves were developed in the 1820s, with the establishment of a gas stove factory in England in 1836, gas stoves gained immense popularity. Gas stoves were a major innovation because their heat was easily adjustable and they could be turned off when not in use. The creation of the gas stove soon led to the development of the gas furnace. As gas was piped to the public, a young woman named Alice H. Parker envisioned a system that would revolutionize the heating of homes. In 1919, Alice H. Parker patented an improvement to the gas furnace using a heat exchanger and air ducts. Air ducts were incorporated into her invention so that heat could be distributed throughout the dwelling more efficiently. Modifications to her very basic design lead to the modern furnaces that we use today. Parker was later honored as an African American inventor famous for her patented central heating system.... When temperatures drop, opting for gas heat will likely be the most affordable option due to lower operating costs when compared to electric... Click Here.

The obvious cons to using gas are the release of CO₂, safety hazards, and high installation costs.. Click Here.

Electric heating comes with varied options, including the flexibility to have appliances that heat each room. Despite expenses associated with electrical heating systems, these systems have proven to be better at converting energy into heat. Efforts across the globe to curb our dependency on fossil fuels has resulted in electric furnaces being the only viable alternative to gas at this time, unless people choose to revert back to oil or wood or use propane. New Yorkers can no longer choose, as natural gas heating is being phased out in the state. The All-Electric Building act bans gas appliances in new construction in 2025 for smaller homes and 2028 for larger buildings.
