Modern-day slavery has many forms of human rights abuses including human trafficking, forced labor, child labor, and debt bondage. These human rights violations occur in various industries. Rice, coffee, sugarcane, and cocoa are often harvested in countries like India, Colombia, and Nigeria where modern-day slavery exists. Garments and textiles are often made in countries such as Ethiopia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam where modern-day slavery exists. Gold and diamonds come from parts of Africa such as Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo where modern-day slavery exists. A lot of building materials come from Nepal, Burma, China and Afghanistan where modern-day slavery exists. 71% of modern-day slaves are women and children. Human trafficking encompasses nearly every facet, if not all aspects, of modern-day slavery. Companies save a fortune having goods made overseas but rarely stop to think why the prices are so cheap. These companies benefit by reaping huge profits despite the imposition of taxes and tariffs. The list of companies using this practice is extensive. You may want to look at the tag on the garment that you are wearing or on the food that you consume.
