The two major video game console manufacturers have been narrowed down to Microsoft and Sony. Of course, Microsoft makes the Xbox, and Sony makes the PlayStation, which is currently in its fifth iteration. Game systems have attracted the attention of adults for some time, and it appears that they are being marketed to target a more mature audience. The ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) adopted the famous "M" for mature logo to alert the public that certain games were designed for those 17 years old or older. Such a rating means the game contains "intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language." There is an "Adults only" rating as well. For more information on game ratings... Obviously, if game systems are geared towards adults, the price tag will reflect that. While a Nintendo Switch was priced around $345 for the complete package, the more expensive version of the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 5 Pro, retailed for as much as $700 around Christmas of 2024. The Xbox was priced around $675 during that time. Virtual reality headsets may be the next stage in the evolution of gaming, and as game systems become increasingly more advanced, expect the price to match. There are still game systems for kids, with the Nintendo Switch leading the way. Though the Nintendo Switch does offer "M" rated games, it also doubles as a handheld, which may suggest it's for kids sitting in the back of the car while riding to school.

What is the best video game console?

  • Microsoft Xbox (Series S or X)
  • Sony Play Station 5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • None of these
