It seems economically and environmentally responsible to recycle. Plastics and other goods can be used hundreds of times in some form or another, if not more. Typically, a person drinks bottled water, and the discarded container ends up in a landfill. The cost of getting raw materials is more expensive than recycling, especially when you take plastic into consideration. There are estimates that 8% to 10% of our total oil supply goes into making plastics. However, the government can't corroborate those numbers. Large scale recycling isn't readily available for plastic, glass, cardboard, or the composting of organic material in the way that the infrastructure exists to recycle copper, aluminum, and iron. Most people have an assortment of items in their garbage bags, usually made of plastic, which exacerbates the problem. Most of the trash is either buried or incinerated. Waste management is big business, and the practicalities of recycling may be outweighed by profit.
