It was announced by Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski that rookie Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback for the team after Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion in their loss against the Baltimore Ravens on November 16th. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco was previously traded away to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Shedeur Sanders had been under center for the Colorado Buffaloes with his father, Deion Sanders, as the head coach. Sanders was eventually selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns in the 2025 draft, which became controversial because he was widely expected to be drafted in the earlier rounds. Sanders earned several accolades over the course of his short career as a college player.

Facing immense pressure, it's reasonable to ponder whether or not he'll have success being thrust into the role as the leader of the team. Some question whether or not he'll be a mainstay or if this is some type of short-lived experiment with the Browns being pretty desperate at the moment. The discussion involving Sanders may not be relevant at all, as the organization has a dismal record, an awful history of decision-making, and a poisoned quarterback pool with Deshaun Watson still in limbo. That's a lot for anyone to overcome, and let's not forget, Shedeur is only 23 years old.
Shedeur does have genes on his side, with his father being one of the most explosive athletes of a generation, a dual-threat in football as a receiver and cornerback, and a dual-threat overall, as he possessed the ability to excel at football and baseball, becoming a professional in both sports. Deion Sanders is the only person to hit a home run and score a touchdown in the same day. A lot of people are interested in seeing if his son is a chip off the old block. The obvious question is, "Can Shedeur turn Cleveland's season around?" They are last in the AFC North, so it's a pretty tall order.
