Warships that docked in Trinidad and Tobago on October 26, 2025, have been met with protests as President Trump sent the vessels to the area to pressure Venezuela militarily. Part of the fleet that President Trump dispatched includes the USS Gerald Ford, which is the largest aircraft carrier in the world, capable of ferrying 90 planes. The president made an assertion that Venezuela is exporting drugs to the United States and is apparently so convinced they are that he ordered some of their boats to be destroyed for fear they were carrying illicit cargo.
43 people have been killed thus far, even though Senator Rand Paul said there was no evidence that any of the boats blown up by military aircraft were transporting drugs. It was reported that U.S. Navy Admiral Alvin Holsey resigned as head of the Southern Command following disagreements over the legality of the operations. Two survivors of the attacks, one person from Ecuador and another from Colombia, were repatriated to their respective countries. As far as we know, the person from Ecuador suspected of narcoterrorism was released because authorities couldn't find proof a crime was committed.
Furthermore, President Trump has accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of being the leader of Tren de Aragua, a transnational gang involved in theft, drug trafficking, and murder, but sources have said the real leader is Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores (Niño Guerrero). Military strikes in Latin America are taking place all over the region, as a couple of boats were also attacked off the coast of Colombia in the Pacific. Colombia's president, Gustavo Petro, has said the attacks violate international law. The Trump administration has not provided any details as to how they gather their intelligence or who has been killed.
Mexico has famed drug cartels that have been operating for decades, bringing narcotics into the United States at the behest of Colombian drug producers. The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the most notorious of these perpetrators; though they are on the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, they have faced no military action as of yet. According to the DEA, 90% of drugs that make it to the US come from Colombia. President Trump has said that during his watch, he would not allow drugs into the country by land or sea.
It may be that the ships gathering near Venezuela represent a more serious matter because a lot more firepower sits near its shores. The Venezuelan president went on to say that these actions are the result of his seeking to oust a political rival, Leopoldo López, by revoking his citizenship and cancelling his passport. He also said that Venezuela does not produce coca leaves. Venezuela is known to have the world's largest oil reserves, surpassing even Saudi Arabia.
