Would you eat lab-grown meat?

Posted 9/10/2025

Uploaded imageAs the global population continues to explode, scientists are exploring innovative food production methods, and cultured meat may be a future solution to combat hunger. Lab-grown meat is manufactured using cells extracted from an animal, which are placed in a nutrient-dense medium inside a bioreactor, where the cells are then multiplied.

Some companies are even in the process of developing synthetic and plant-based growth media to cut costs and scale up production. The Good Food Institute revealed that many meat products are under regulatory review in over 10 countries, including the European Union, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Israel, Singapore, and others. The probability that these new setups will meet regulatory safety standards is relatively high. The benefits of this experimental technology could be revolutionary, dramatically reducing costs and eliminating the need to raise and slaughter livestock, which makes space requirements negligible when compared to traditional methods.

Questions have been raised, however, relating to animal ethics, human health, and the environment. According to ScienceDirect, existing tissue engineering approaches in lab-based meat production have limitations that can restrict meat quality and manufacturing scalability making lab-grown meat far more expensive than the old-fashioned version. Even though costs have dropped over time, early prototypes were thousands of dollars per pound. Analysts believe that large-scale facilities and affordable growth media can make cultivated meat cheaper compared to farmed meat in the next decade. Global agencies like the World Health Organization have already started safety workstreams to assess standards for cell-based foods in an effort to minimize the risks.
