The National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazis for short, was founded over a century ago in 1920 after World War I. Nazi ideology centered around racism and antisemitism, which was based on the notion of Aryan heritage being superior to all other people on the globe. Nazis considered Aryans to be white non-Jewish people, typically having blonde hair and blue eyes. The leader of the Nazi Party, Adolf Hitler, came to power after being appointed Chancellor in 1933. Once in power, Hitler and his regime began to make their hate doctrine law. During their 12-year reign, their most infamous act was the Holocaust, when Jewish people were killed in unspeakable ways, based solely on their race. It is estimated that 6 million or more Jewish people were murdered during this time. According to the Oxford dictionary, a terrorist is defined as a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. Nazi Germany began World War II with the invasion of Poland and, subsequently, continued their campaign by invading other countries. The Nazis declared war on the United States. They even display the insignia of the old Nazi Party, the swastika*. They seek to revive and reinstate the ideas of the old regime. Embracing the beliefs of a hate group does not deprive someone of freedom of speech. The Neo-Nazis held a demonstration in Lincoln Heights, Ohio, professing their hate in public to the dismay of the Black populace in the area.
The outrage of the residents may have stemmed from the known policies and practices of the old Nazis. Much the same as Nazi swastikas, the Confederate flag is a symbol for those whose tenets justified slavery in opposition to the United States. The Ku Klux Klan, which various historians have classified as America's first terrorist organization, brandished the Confederate flag on a frequent basis while using scare tactics to intimidate people in the South. However, if the neo-Nazis are classified as a terrorist group, street gangs could be eligible for the same designation. The Street Terrorism Enforcement Prevention Act, or the STEP Act, enacted in California in 1988 and adopted by other states, says that any person who actively participates in any criminal street gang with knowledge that its members engage in or have engaged in a pattern of criminal gang activity and who willfully promotes, furthers, or assists in any felonious criminal conduct by members of that gang shall be punished by imprisonment - the key word being "terrorism." Street gangs operate using similar methods - murder, robbery, extortion, etc. - waging war on communities throughout the country. Gang members, who identify with their organizations by tattoos, attire, and so forth, seek to advance the gang's objectives.
*It must be noted that the swastika didn't originally identify with Nazi Germany. Originally, the swastika was used in various Eurasian religions and cultures.
