Cruise is a robotaxi company and a subsidiary of General Motors that had to recall 950 of its driverless cars after one of the cars struck a pedestrian in San Francisco. The technology is far from perfect despite General Motors investing $10 billion dollars so far. Driverless semi-trucks are slated to hit the road as well and they have been in development for quite some time. In light of what happened with Cruise, being that they have paused all operations nation-wide due to the aforementioned incident, it will be interesting to see if huge companies like Volvo can be successful with their ambitions. Volvo partnered with FedEx back in 2018 and is prototyping the Vera which is a fully autonomous truck with no cab at all. Imagine the havoc a malfunctioning autonomous semi-truck could wreak in rush hour traffic. On the other side of the spectrum, driverless vehicles don't require a person, which means, someone out there is losing a job - whether it be a trucker or an Uber driver. Autonomous vehicles and robots have already eliminated several jobs as it is. Elettric 80 is a company that manufactures automatic guided vehicles, or AGVs for short, and these vehicles can do everything forklift drivers used to do. The future is coming, we just don't know where that leaves us.
