If you haven't heard of BRICS, it is an intergovernmental organization comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa which is where the acronym stems from. Other members include the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Ethiopia and Egypt. The organization was founded on June 16, 2009, and has since grown in popularity with several other nations seeking to be involved. The United States is not a member and if you're an American citizen, it could affect you. The dollar has long been the world reserve currency, and the objective of BRICS is to change that, which was announced shortly after their first summit. Countries have been punished in the past with U.S. sanctions all over the globe, primarily, because the United States controls the dollar. It doesn't seem coincidental that the founding of BRICS came during the near collapse of the U.S. economy which happened in 2008. The economy unraveled when people began to default on their mortgages and the companies that insured the mortgages couldn't pay, which had all the appearances of a pyramid scheme - it became an international banking crisis. Several other bad banking practices added fuel to the fire and, evidently, it didn't go unnoticed by the rest of the world.
