In the year 2000 as well as the year 2016, presidents were elected that did not win the popular vote, George W. Bush and Donald J. Trump respectively. For some time, we've been told that every vote counts, but in those years, a person's individual vote didnβt count. There is now a push to do away with the Electoral College because of these discrepancies in the system. If you donβt know what the Electoral College isβ¦. Click here
Some see the Electoral College as an ancient, outdated 18th century concept that is no longer needed. Senators Dick Durbin, Peter Welch, and Brian Schatz have introduced a constitutional amendment to replace the Electoral College with a popular vote. However, some believe that the current system is sound because it limits a particular region of the country from having beliefs that could sway the entire nation. For instance, southern states were the most populous in 1860 and they held fast to ideology that supported white supremacy and opposed the abolition of slavery. Had their sheer numbers been counted against the votes of others throughout the nation, Abraham Lincoln may have never been elected and thus, slavery might not have been eradicated for some time. Consequently, though our system is democratic, it's not exactly "majority rule".
