Electric vehicles, or EVs, have grown in popularity because they are considered "eco-friendly". With zero emissions, they present an attractive alternative to the combustion engine. CO2 emissions from cars are known to contribute to global warming - a phenomenon caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases. However, the electricity that powers electric vehicles is still produced the same way that it has been for years - by boiling water to create steam, the steam turns a turbine that turns a generator, and the power created is distributed to customers. Raw materials in the process include coal, trees, and/or nuclear power. The lithium batteries that power EVs get some of their lithium from parts of Africa where child labor is often used. Cobalt is also a crucial ingredient in rechargeable batteries and people are further exploited to procure it. Also, the infrastructure to support electric vehicles doesn't currently exist or would require trillions of dollars to institute. Maybe charging times will decrease and the technology will improve.
