Data points to the existence of a Prison Industrial Complex. In summary, the Prison Industrial Complex is basically a pathway to funnel people into becoming cheap labor for corporations. Prisons are typically classified as correctional facilities, presumably designed to correct the behavior that led to incarceration in the first place. American society emphasizes being tough on crime and understandably so. The families of victims, or victims themselves, may experience some minute sense of gratification when a perpetrator is apprehended and sentenced, and the public may be relieved when a criminal is off the streets. Some feel that a horrific environment such as prison should act as a deterrent to committing crime. A felony is a crime punishable by imprisonment for at least one year. Those convicted may find themselves in the confines of the penal system and they aren't treated any differently from extremely violent offenders, murderers, serial killers, or rapists - some who are truly monstrous and are serving life terms or longer. A guy behind bars for rape and armed robbery, the size of Tyson Fury (6'9", 278lbs), may share a cell with a guy convicted of drug possession the size of Floyd Mayweather, Jr (5'8", 148lbs). In addition, all sorts of criminal gangs operate in prison as they would on the streets. The 8th Amendment was drafted to protect U.S. citizens from cruel and unusual punishment but 'cruel and unusual' is vague. The legal system isn't perfect and innocent people have languished behind bars for decades later to be exonerated. Click here
The Roman lawyer and philosopher Cicero proposed, ambiguously, that "the punishment shalt fit the offence."
